For years, my family have been torn apart by the repercussions of domestic violence. For the past few months, I've been struggling to accept the reality of our situation. It's 11 years on, and I often feel like a failure because I still feel no closure after everything that has happened. When I was at school, teachers that were aware of what was going on would tell me that one day I would end up writing a book or doing something positive with my own experience. As the years have progressed, this has become harder and harder to motivate myself towards. I have had numerous conversations with social work regarding my concerns, written a lot of letters and even started a petition at one point. Each time, I have been pushed back or made to feel like a crazy and traumatised child. I am an adult now, but after being silenced and ignored so many times, it has become harder and harder to fight back and I have questioned my own sanity over the years.
1,031,120 - is the number of domestic violence incidents reported in England and Wales during 2016. Just ONE year. I’m always uncomfortable sharing personal things, but when there’s a chance to make a difference and bring about change by telling a story I think that’s more important than my own fears. Some of you might remember a petition I created years ago, I must have only been about 14/15 at the time. My brother, sister and I were placed into the care of my grandmother after living in a home of domestic violence for several years. I started a petition because social work wanted to send my brother and sister back to live with my mother and her partner as they said they had no evidence the violence was still ongoing. The reason they had no evidence it was still ongoing is because my mum was under his control and would cover up what was really happening and I had hoped they would listen to my concerns and acknowledge the risk in sending my extremely young brother and sister back to live in this home. I was thrilled when my petition gained 1495 signatures and a lot of support from the public and messages from people opening up to me with similar experiences.
Sadly, social work ignored my petition and I was told that I could be in trouble with the police for my petition if I didn’t take it down and shortly afterwards social work went through with their decision to send them back to live with my mother and my violent step-dad. As a young teenager it took a lot of courage to speak out and I think having my concerns ignored by professionals for years and years has made me more fearful of speaking out as an adult and eventually I lost faith in social work’s ability to protect children.
Sadly, earlier on this year it was revealed that the violence has in fact continued on for years. However, my mum finally made the choice to leave my step-dad and charge him for everything he has done. The police have had the polar opposite approach of social work. Now there is a chance he may go to prison for the things he has done.I think it speaks volumes about the system that the police can hear about the horrible things this man has done and think there is a chance he could be locked up because he is a dangerous man whereas the social work department seen a suitable home for children.
Their decision to send them back allowed this violence to continue on in the presence of my younger brother and sister for years. It’s time the social work department stop playing happy families and putting their targets/budget before the well-being of the children they are supposed to protect. The whole system is a disgrace and it has taken a lot of courage to share this story but I hope if enough people speak out then it will bring about change and encourage people who have been in similar circumstances to speak out and get angry until it can’t be ignored. If you see/hear something that makes you worry about somebody’s wellbeing then don’t ignore it - report it to somebody.
Things can’t go on like this.I am hoping by starting this blog and sharing my own concerns and experiences over the years, I may not only raise awareness and help someone else but may find some closure through writing about it.
EDIT: Grabbing a cup of tea and then I'll work through all the questions and make sure I answer everything. I'm not feeling well so will be spending the night in bed with my laptop so keep the questions coming, I'll be here all night to get through them. :)
EDIT 2: I am so overwhelmed by this response, I was not expecting this kind of feedback and all of you have made my evening and made me feel even more confident that I'm doing the right thing by starting this website. Like I mentioned in a lot of my comments, I am very new to all this and still getting used to things but I hope you'll all keep up to date with my posts and remember, if there is anything you would like to share then you can get in touch. Also, if anybody has any tips for building up a regular readership, that would be great.
Can you give me a shit load of details here? I'm about to be a father to a girl fortunatly because my wife carries Hemophilia. We're thinking about just not having any more kids because of this issue. We didn't do IVF or anything and were basically just hoping for a girl or the 50/50 chance he wouldn't have Hemophilia. I don't know if my wife carries A or B but does this gene therepy work for either? Is it a total cure or will you still have joint issues?
Edit: Also, nice work circling anyone who reads that journal.
He left office in 1993 and is still spending.
Holy fucking shit! Was his campaign account THAT massive? Are they allowed to invest those funds and use the capital gains or income from investing?
Thank you Chris and the rest of the team for all of your work on uncovering and reporting on this!
Hi, pal!! Do you have any pets? And if so, what are their names?
I'd love to learn how to program, especially graphical programming like OpenGL and DirectX or equivalents, and after talking to some family friends who do it for a living, apparently I have the right coding philosophy for getting the job done well, but I just have no idea where to start. I have extremely basic Java and C++ skills, and can do small script prototypes in Python. Where would you recommend I start developing my skills and what are some good projects to start with that teach you a lot?
This is really weird to see because my family is from that same Pueblo! I haven’t been back there in awhile but i do love dropping by. Have fun!
How many people still live in the Pueblo? And if you known anybody from the Cata family, tell them Sonny’s grandkid says, hi!
Thank you for your response, it definitely gave me a better understanding of her perspective
I'll give you the short(ish) version
Last year in feb I had a series of injections and then had to take some steroid tablets for like 6 weeks and since then I've not needed any more infusions of Factor VIII or had any spontaneous bleeds.
The reason it's still a potential cure is because from my understanding they aren't sure how long it'll last and while my body has been making Factor VIII now my levels have sorta been going up and down and all over the places at times.
From my understanding they used a virus vector that targets my liver and puts the Factor VIII gene in.
He left with around $400k in his account. Through some wise investments, he grew that to over $1 million while still spending lavishing on himself.
I HAVE A GARY ITS NAME IS GARY
WAIT HONESTLY I PROBABLY SHOULD NOT SAY THAT CAN YOU DELETE
DOES THAT DELETE
IS IT DELETED
I HAD A FISH BUT HE DIED
YEAH I THINK THATS WAY BETTER
I think it depends on what you're really going for. I think I'd probably recommend strengthening your Java/C++ skills a little bit for OpenGL/DirectX usage since that can get really complex and upsetting really quickly in my experience. The one that everyone recommends is Tic-Tac-Toe in text in a terminal, but if you're looking for a more graphical task then try making Pong in OpenGL or something like that. From there you can modify it slightly, make powerups, random events, choose a different scoring mechanism(score based on how much you move your paddle?), etc. The program is yours!
Hope I could help!
That's the hardest thing about it. Don't blame yourself for seeing the signs. I lived with it for 3 years, would visit my grandmother every single weekend and she has always been the closest person to me, even before she took me in but she even had no idea. The control aspect makes it so hard to spot, it's literally like brainwashing. I even wrote a letter to social workers telling them my step dad was like a dad to me and proclaimed how much I loved him. I had been forced to do it obviously, but that's what makes it so hard to spot. I wrote an article on the warning signs etc. You might find it a helpful read, but don't beat yourself up. I'm so sorry to hear the story but you should be so thankful that your sister is out, there are a lot of people that never escape. Have a read here. https://writeforadifference.com/2018/01/02/why-you-may-be-in-an-abusive-relationship-without-knowing/
I don’t really have a question, just wanted to say that it is awesome you are so focused and driven at that age! Hope you are successful.
Mmh, I guess I will ask- when do you find the time to dedicate to this with school and any suggestions on getting kids into coding?
Edit: spelling ugh
GOD WOLVES MAKE ME SO MAD
THEY ARE SO POWERFUL AND STRONG AND THEY MAKE ME QUESTION THE HIERARCHY OF OUR NATURAL CYCLE
UGH I GET SO FRUSTRATED THINKING ABOUT HOW THEIR POPULATIONS ARE DWINDLING
OR HOW DESPITE NEAR EXTINCTION IN CERTAIN AREAS THEY CONTINUE TO REGAIN THEIR STRENGTH
Thank you!! :)
Basically any time I have when I'm not in school I put towards either playing a game or working on a game. I should really be putting more effort towards my schoolwork which has fallen by the way-side especially in the months leading up to the release of Mass O' Kyzt, but now that it's done I think I can spend a little more time and energy on schoolwork.
As for getting kids into coding, I think that the kids have to have a significant appreciation for computer first. I think that once they realize just how powerful, fast and versatile a computer is and once they realize that coding is literally the means by which they can manipulate humanity's greatest accomplishment, they'll want to learn about coding. I think the best learning experience is when a kid would take a template of a program, maybe they'd copy it out or something, and then they can add bits to it to make the program slightly different but ever so slightly personalized.
I don't really have much experience with that stuff so maybe I'm just talking nonsense but I hope that gave you something to think about?
Just wanted to say keep focusing on being a computer whiz and building things that actually interest people. You’ll be far more successful, and happier, than following a standard academic focus.
Are there any books or movies that you think have accurate/informative portrayed of native culture?
Hey, not to attack you but I am honestly curious. Why do you support the reintroduction of gun rights for abusers after only a "cooling off" period, rather than the loss of those rights? There are a lot of stats saying that having a gun in the household leads to more deaths, and we know from the texas shooting last year that some of those perpetrators come back later and do shoot their victims/family.
To me, it seems very obvious that unless the cooling off period is long and comes with counseling to change the mindset of the abuser, you are removing the danger to law enforcement only for the time immediately surrounding the conviction. But many victims go back, and even if they don't, many perpetrators reoffend. It won't protect the victim or the next victim, or the police who show up at the next incident.
Thank you!! :) That's the idea. For a while I was kind of disenfranchised with getting into gamedev and thought that I'd just spend my life working a 9-5 as a software developer in some random company, but at some point I just... decided not to? Now I've got my heart set on getting a career in gamedev, or becoming homeless trying.
To be honest i haven't watched a ton of native american movies (i know its ironic cause i mentioned i do film, and am native) but I just never ended up watching a lot of those movies. However, i do reccomend anything with Wes Studi, he's a fantastic actor and portrays things in a very accurate way.
Thank you for sharing :)
Did you have to pay for the treatment? Did you have to sign a contract for eventual side effects, or the like?
so instead of zombie voters we got zombie candidates? in the case of dead candidates, who authorizes the funds transfer and can they be held liable and be prosecuted? also, these accounts, how do they stay open for so long and how come there is no oversight?
How do you feel about the Samuel Johnson quote "(H)e who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man"?
As an ex game developer at EA, Criterion and a few others, I just want to say that what you've done getting a game together to releasable quality is amazing but beware that working in games for someone else is a completely different experience.
It's just implementing other people's ideas for the most part. I was given the choice to either design or code (not many get the choice), I chose code and its like in that moment my ideas were worth less than some first year intern just because they had a job title. If you're really passionate about making good games, having to implement other people's bad ideas can be quite soul wrenching. I earned less working every day of the week and weekends, than I did when I worked 2 nights a week doing websites. I had Christmas booked 6 month in advance to go see my parents, the game hadn't shipped yet. I offered to work remotely. I made sure my handover was up to scratch, etc. but I was kicked out of the team when I came back. I had one boss take credit for all my work and leave me with no reward after working my ass off.
If you've got a chance to make your own games company, do it. Don't go working for someone else if you can help it at all. Hire an experienced game developer as soon as you can. So you can learn from them. Always hire people that know more than you about something important.
I own an AI company now after many years to course correct and I couldn't be happier but really be careful what you choose. I did learn so much from working with great people, so make sure you get some of them around you either way. Good luck!
Wes Studi is amazing. The last of the Mohicans was the first "serious" movie I remember watching as a kid and even then I was blown away by him.
domestic violence with female perpetrators, because I think a lot of people have the misinformed opinion that it’s not as common or it’s not as bad or damaging. There are 2.2 million male victims of domestic abuse yet in the UK there are only enough spaces in refuge for just over 100 males. Also, 52% men in relationships like this are too scared to leave because they feel embarrassed.
As a former male victim of DV, it really means a lot to me that you are highlighting this issue. A lot of DV advocates only focus on the “wife beater” narrative and all but ignore male victims and female perpetrators (just look at the last DV advocate we had do an AMA. She said there wasn’t enough research to comment on female perps and her organization actually supports the obscenely sexist Duluth Model).
Most people don’t realize that men make up roughly half of all DV victims and when it comes to unreciprocated violence (meaning only one person is being violent), women are actually the aggressors and men the victims in 70% of those cases.
So again, thank you! I really appreciate someone like you that wants to address both sides of the issue instead of focusing only on female victims. Our support structures for male victims are extremely poor and it feels like our governments aren’t interested in doing anything about it.
Take for instance, the Violence Against Women Act. Most people aren’t aware there was already a gender neutral version of this Act that covered both male and female victims. Unfortunately, the National Organization for Women, and its associated legal foundations, successfully lobbied to replace the gender neutral federal Family Violence Prevention and Services Act of 1984 with the obscenely gendered Violence Against Women Act of 1994. The passing of that law cut male victims out of support services and legal assistance in more than 60 passages, just because they were male.
EDIT: Incase people want to see exactly how bad our support structures for men are, here are some statistics.
Men who are abused and seek help from shelters and hotlines- --were told that the service was only for women (49.9% shelter / 63.9% hotline / 42.9% online) --were accused of being the abuser (40.2% shelter / 32.2% hotline / 18.9% online) --given a phone number for a men's service which turned out to be a program for abusers (25.2% hotline / 27.1% online) --were actively mocked (16.4% shelter / 15.2% hotline)
Men who contacted police --were arrested 33.4% of the time --their abuser was arrested 26.5% of the time --were placed in jail 29% of the time --their abuser was placed in jail 20% of the time --faced criminal charges 22% of the time --their abuser faced criminal charges 13% of the time
Men who sought help from a mental health professional --were taken seriously 68% of the time --were given information on resources 30.1% of the time
Men who sought help from a medical professional --were given information on resources 14% of the time
Our support structures are so bad that men who sought help from any of the above experienced a higher rate of PTSD than men who didn't.
The positive experience rate for men seeking support is only 25%, with a negative experience rate of 67%. Women committing the same study had a positive rate of 95% and negative rate unmeasurable.
Compared to men who didn't seek help, men who did and had a positive experience displayed a 40% reduction in self harm, drug and alcohol abuse, and incidence of PTSD... But a 37% increase per negative experience... but remember, the negative experiences outweighed the positive 67% to 25%.
Meaning that, on average, the support men are offered is so bad, men are better off with their abusers.
As Saxby Chambliss told us, they stay open "because there's money in it". There's no oversight because there legislators don't want there to be. They've killed bills in the past that proposed ways to close the loophole we identified.
HE WHO MAKES A MAN OF HIMSELF GETS TO STAY INSIDE AND EAT MELTED CHEESE
Don't go working for someone else if you can help it at all.
That's pretty much been the plan. I really value my independence and creative freedom as it is, and I really can't see myself ever working at a AAA company. Maybe at a small-scale indie company, but that's a big maybe and I think I would have to be afforded a large amount of input to not get restless.
Thank you for the advice, I've been trying to get into contact with some very talented developers in my area. There's this organization called Games Wales which organizes meetups and other events once a month for Welsh game developers to attend, but most of the places they go are 18+ and well, that's a problem for a few more months.^^
I'll definitely keep everything you said in mind. :)
Watch Hostiles! Great movie that just came out and he stars in it
It is such a massive issue, and one that I care about very deeply. It angers me the naivety that exists when it comes to male victims, and it only makes it harder for them to come out with their stories and escape abuse. The amount of female perpetrators has increased seven fold since 2004 and if we don't solve the attitude of only "wife beaters" existing then that number is just going to keep growing. I'd love to share a story like yours on my blog, because I think it could really be eye opening and give strength to a lot of men also going through DV. Would you be willing to write something for my blog? I could help if you needed it, and you could stay anonymous if you like.
How much of your reporting comes from open records? Couldn't software help automate a lot of the investigative work?
Bathing suit season is just around the corner, do you have any tips for keeping a trim figure?
The more I read this thread, the more I can identify to you.
I'm 15 years old, started high-school this year. Game development is my dream. Games carried me through all the crap I went through as a weak, weird introverted kid. Without them, I don't think I would have carried on very long. Art is the way we learn the things we can't learn in a school or that we can't all figure out just by experiencing them. That's what I want to try doing for the world.
But in the last couple years, I almost lost my hope of ever reaching that goal, because I couldn't get myself to do much to work towards it. Seeing that you think the same way as I do and that you've made it at such an age gives me some hope again. Plus, thanks to this post, I just found out about Godot ! Since GameMaker stopped being free, that's gonna be of use.
Thank you and good luck.
What’s up bro? Fellow Puebloan here from Isleta lol, never thought I’d see a Native on here doing an AMA!
Wow, thank you so much! It feels really good to know that I somehow inspired someone by making a weird lil game and then doing a reddit post about it.
Best of luck to you on your gamedev endeavors! :)
How's it going man? I felt it was necessary as people have a lot of different outlooks on us to this day. Let me know if theres any discrepancies on my part
How do you feel about reformed abusers sharing their journey?
lol you're too kind :)
Haha, thank you!!! :) That means a lot.
I'd love to marry a native woman, and of course I want my kids to participate but if I do fall in love with someone that isnt native, it wont be the biggest deal
I’m totally open to it, I want people to learn and grow from reading my website and the way to do that is by sharing information from all perspectives, and I think it’s rare to find a reformed abuser willing to share their journey so I think it would be really valuable and a good insight from the other side
Yup that's a fine suggestion, one I can relate to. Years ago, I made a Java music player similar to Winamp. I tried cramming in as many features of the original as I could, and it turned into a very satisfying learning experience. One silly customization I did was adding a message box that said 'Fuck you, I don't do that!' when dragging and dropping a non-music file into the program... Not the most mature thing to do, in retrospect. :D
I haven't seen anything in the AMA about the dance itself yet. What can you tell us about the native dance styles and how they vary between the tribes?
There are very few modern hoop dance performers who do that sort of off-body work with more than about 5 hoops, though, and I've been told that 28 is traditional in native dance.
Obviously LED hoops are not a part of the native traditions, but it'd be fun to see what a skilled practitioner of the traditional dances could do with modern hoops and lighting design chosen to reflect their artistic heritage.
I AM SO GLAD SOMEONE FINALLY ADDRESSED THE HORSE MENACE
WE ALL NEED TO DO OUR PART TO DEFEND HUMANITY
HORSES ARE TOO BIG AND ANYTHING THAT CAN KICK YOU TO DEATH SHOULD NOT EXIST
LOOKING AT YOU, CASSOWARY
Haha, that's great! :)
The dance starts at sunrise, we come down from a mountain/hill thats nearby ( about a 1/4-1/2 mile away) and proceed to dance our way into the Pueblo. We dance til around 8 am or so, then we take an intermission from 8-9:15. Then we dance until 4 with 1 more intermission in between noon and 4 pm or so.
At 4 pm we do the runaway song, where we dance our final song and a clown/apache shoots a blank gun into the air after the final verse and we run before a woman can catch us. The whole point is to get caught by a girl, where she takes you back to her house after and feeds you after a long day of the dance.
Here's a video of the the dance we perform in from 9-2:30/3:00ish https://youtu.be/9LMGONSg2_0
I could not find the ending however
I'm so sorry to hear that. That is so awful. To be honest, I don't want to lie here. I'm not a professional in this matter, I'm just here to share my own perspective on things and encourage other survivors to feel strong and share their stories, but every situation is individual. Leaving an abuser is such a complex subject and I don't want to pretend that I'm equipped to answer it.
I live in the US, but I've sent my story in via your blog's share a story feature.
Credit goes to Noah for turning us onto this story. He'd been pestering Mark Foley and George LeMieux about their campaign spending for years. Last year, at a conference, we got to talking about how this was a national story and how we could use the FEC's own data to report on it.
HAHA YEAH I KNOW WHAT BANANAS ARE AND AM DEFINITELY NOT GOOGLING THEM RIGHT NOW
Good luck!! 2 years might be a tad young, but yeah- 11 years sounds like a good time to get at least some kind of programmatic foundation in their thought process. Good luck!!
It's understandable to a certain extent but I see a lot of people just wearing the native clothing because its cool or trendy but generally (from my experience) the same people are never really interested in diving into the actual culture (the good and the bad) but just do it because its the type of fashion we wear in the SW
Thank you so much! Can I ask if you would like to be named or if you would like to keep it anonymous?
Do you think that sort of funding model has a future in journalism on a larger scale, or is there another adjustment that needs to be made?
Hi, you're my favorite twitter account to follow. Thanks for keeping the world informed on your v important non wolf activities. <3
• What is your opinion on three wolf moon shirts?
• Do you like watermelon?
• Did you catch the super blue blood moon last night?
How did you learn how to do graphic design for the game? How long have you spent making the game?
I'm from Nanbe (currently in Atlanta) and I'm wondering about your views on the decolonization policies that some pueblos are undertaking- e.g. Changing the Spanish names back to original Tewa (Tiwa/Towa), not saying "pueblo Indian" but rather Tewa, etc. What do you think?
HEY IF YOU CAN GET YOUR ARMS THROUGH SHIRT SLEEVES I SAY YOU CAN PUT WHATEVER YOU WANT ON THE SHIRT ITSELF
I AM A HUGE FAN OF WATERMELON, ITS LIKE IF APPLES WERE BLOOD
I DID NOT SEE THAT MOON BECAUSE IT WAS CLOUDY BUT THAT MAKES SENSE BECAUSE I FELT WAY STRONGER THAN USUAL LAST NIGHT
I've spent about 9 months making this game, all in all.
As for the graphics, I've spent the past 2 years or so creating placeholder graphics that I never thought would stick. Eventually, these placeholder graphics became high enough quality to where I just... kept them. I really never meant to learn pixel art on purpose, but it happened and I guess I'm going to keep developing my pixel art skills!
My best friend is from Nambe! Do you know the Kaskallas? I love the fact that we went from San Juan Pueblo to Ohkay Owingeh really was a big deal for us because I felt we were now makjing progress and embracing a new era of native american greatness/pride
What legally constitutes a 'campaign'? Can a single candidate and a few friends 10 years after the fact still legally be a campaign, or do you need to meet a threshold like non-profits do?
Do you think wolves should be reintroduced to Scotland?
ABSOLUTELY I THINK THAT WOLVES SHOULD BE INTRODUCED TO A LOT OF PLACES
-THAT GAP OUTLET THAT I AM NO LONGER ALLOWED INTO
-SERIOUSLY WHY CANT YOU BRING HAM TO THE GAP
I used Aseprite and a whole lot of trial-and-error.
EVERY TIME I GO OUT WITH A HUMAN THEY’RE ALL
HEY TAKE OFF YOUR TRENCH COAT
WOW IT SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF HORRIBLE SECRET
SO I FEEL LIKE I JUST NEED TO FOCUS ON ME RIGHT NOW
If I learn a 3D modelling program, it's probably going to be Blender due to the fact it's open source and I've had a little practice with it. I can't do much, but I know vaguely what the UI looks like^^
Alcohol is still prominent in the community, and I would like to be able to help my community find other outlets that are positive instead of drinking and gambling. I find it kinda sad that on my reservation, the casino and the liquor store are practically right next to eachother, and are open all week,, whereas the recreational centers never have a set time that they're open. And yes my grandmother made traditional dishes while I was growing up and she still does to this day. My favorite dish is Red Chile stew (potaoes and meat with red chile) and posole mixed together! it's so good!!!
Sorry, still getting the hang of things with the website so thanks for the feedback. I’ll make it clearer for people on the site. You can write your story straight away if you like but I know there’s a lot of people that aren’t confident with writing so even just drop a message saying “hi, I have something I’d like to share” and I can email back and help you put it together and discuss things. Whatever you prefer!
What are the tax implications of having a "campaign" account? Do campaigns pay taxes on their contributions/expenses?
What is the best way to eat a freshly killed cotton tail rabbit?
Why did you choose godot instead of unreal or other physics engines? What language did you use?
I’m Laguna Pueblo and whenever I get homesick I make red chile stew! Made it last week, lol. My husband loves it when I’m homesick because I finally cook.
I RECENTLY CAME INTO OWNERSHIP OF A SLOW COOKER AND FRANKLY I HATE IT AND I DO NOT KNOW WHY I AM SURPRISED BECAUSE ALL THE STUFF I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT IT IS RIGHT THERE IN THE NAME. A FRESHLY KILLED RABBIT SHOULD BE EATEN FRESH, JUST DIVE RIGHT IN. IF YOU WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO EAT RAW MEAT IT WOULD MAKE YOU SICK OR SOMETHING
OH IT MAKES THEM SICK? LIKE INCREDIBLY?
OKAY I’M GOING TO TAKE ANOTHER RUN AT THAT ONE
HEY PAL, I JUST GOT A SLOW COOKER AND I LOVE IT!
I tried Unreal and Unity, but Unreal confused me and Unity was a bit buggy and difficult to use on Linux. Godot was super intuitive and worked perfectly and fluidly, so I just stuck with that one. Good thing, too, because I also tried Game Maker, LWJGL, PyGame, Pyglet, C++ and OpenGL and Batch Script when I was super young.
I have family in Laguna as well! what are your favorite dishes?
Yes, guilt is such a common thing. I felt guilt myself, wondering what I could have done differently. That is what relationships like that do though, they make you doubt yourself and take away your self-esteem. The fact you have left is amazing. So many people don't get out of those relationships and you should be so proud of yourself, and if you tell anybody about your experience and they aren't proud of you too then that is just because they don't understand. You are very strong for escaping and very inspiring. So thank you for sharing too! Stories like yours are empowering.
What is the best way to contract/shrink the size of campaigns? Would that eliminate the amounts of money at every stage of the process, including this one after the fact?
What is your favorite kind of bird?
How long did it take you to reach the level of coding that was needed to create this? How long did finding all the bugs take? (my java code for courses still has infinite bugs and I can’t imagine ever posting to steam so props for putting yourself out there :) )
Edit: wow my set of upvotes >100 thanks for all the advice on using an engine - i might look into it once I reach the end of the job search - glad you’re doing so much with your life already at 17 - it really is much harder to learn something well that you’re passionate about once you’re trying to accumulate job worthy skills so congrats on being ahead
Do you speak a native American language?
I've been programming since I was like 8 years old so the programming side of things just came from a lot of experience. I have spent the last two years or so getting really into game development so that's when I've really been concentrating on improving my skills- it's slow, but I think it's paid off.
Haha, I'd recommend using a full-on engine rather than just Java and whatever framework(LWJGL, etc) if you're trying to make a game as an indie. There's really no shame in it- it saves a lot of time and pain that could be spent on the higher-level elements of your game. Performance isn't really that relevant unless you're doing something really unconventional that other engines just don't facilitate properly, but concepts like that are few and far between.
As for finding all the bugs...
I just pushed an update to fix like 3 of them after getting a few messages about them.>.> It's the price to pay for no real QA testing, I suppose.
Not fluently, but I will get there, I have a great support system that has been helping me out an I will learn it, just need some time.
Yes there was, didn’t realise the paragraphs didn’t work. Better now?
Have there been any eye-catching purchases with these funds? Or any amount spent on something you weren't expecting?
Which is better, head scratches or belly rubs?
Why does your site have so many ads? Hosting a wp site doesn't cost a fortune...
I posted this in reply to another question but the most random/surprising to me was Lyndon LaRouche who spend tens of thousands of campaign dollars publishing "Children of Satan III: The Sexual Congress for Cultural Fascism".
THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE QUESTIONS BECAUSE ON ONE HAND BELLY RUBS ARE MORE SATISFYING OVERALL BUT THEY LEAVE YOU INCREDIBLY VULNERABLE TO ATTACK SO I WOULD HAVE TO SAY HEAD SCRATCHES BECAUSE YOU GET ALL THE SATISFACTION WITH NONE OF THE STRESS
Agreed! The Godot Engine allows for C++ modules to be added at compilation, which is what I had to do in order to integrate the Steam API.
Godot 3.0 has this thing called GDNative which allows for C++ module integration without having to re-compile the engine which I am looking forward to a lot, considering Godot uses MinGW conventions and Steam uses MSVC- not exactly the nicest thing to compile on a MinGW compiler which throws a tantrum at the sight of certain MSVC types.
Like I’ve said, I’m clueless about with all this stuff. I’ve picked a theme and I write the posts and that’s about it! I’ve only been doing it for a month :)
Who's a good boy?
Just to lighten the mood (but in no way undermine and disrespect the trauma you suffered) do you like fish and chips?
No, it does not surprise me that congress writes massive loopholes into campaign finance laws and underfunds the commission responsible for oversight of campaign spending.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD BOY? IS A GOOD BOY BORN OR MADE? DO WE NOT ALL CONTAIN THE RAW MATERIALS NECESSARY TO BE A GOOD BOY OR, GOD FORBID, A DIRTY DOG? IS THERE NOT A DARK PORTION WITHIN ALL OUR HEARTS?
ANYWAY I AM, I BELIEVE IT IS ME WHO IS THE GOOD BOY
Oh wow, that's super cool, though I suppose it makes sense. I think one of Godot's greatest strengths is its ability for rapid prototyping, so I suppose that's a pretty smart use-case for it.
What was the most random thing you found purchased? Most concerning?
Do you want a treat / ball?
What do you like most about the workflow of the Godot engine and what do you hate most about it?
What do you like the most about being a Native American and what do you like least about being a Native American?
Reporting this stuff to the police doesn't really help unless kids are involved. What can we do when kids aren't involved? As far as the law is concerned consenting adults and all that jazz.
lol this wasn't in our story because his campaign ended in debt so we didn't scrutinize him but Lyndon LaRouche spent tens of thousands dollars from his campaign account publishing the book "Children of Satan III: The Sexual Congress for Cultural Fascism"
I WILL NOT BE DISTRACTED BY THE PRESENCE OF SOME SORT OF BALL AND I WILL ABSOLUTELY NEVER CHASE AFTER IT BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE BALL HAS ACTUALLY NOT BEEN THROWN AND FRANKLY THAT VIOLATION OF TRUST IS WHAT PROVES THAT THE HEART OF MAN IS CORRUPT AND DISGUSTING
SOME BACON WOULD BE NICE THOUGH YES I WILL ACCEPT THAT
I really like how prominent and easy-to-use the Node system is. I know that other engines have similar hierarchy things, but in Godot it feels really integral to the engine. Everything is based on Nodes and it gives everything a really nice, modular feel.
The worst is probably the audio system. I know that it's entirely different and a lot nicer in Godot 3.0 now, but as of 2.1.4 it crashes constantly and it's really awkward to use.
I've always loved being native american, but when I moved out of state for the first time I truly fell in love with my culture because I then got to see how blessed I am to be apart of the indigenous community. I guess I finally got to see how unique it was and the pride I have will never go away.
What I hate is that people will ask the dumbest and most thoughtless questions, like when I'm at work serving tables I always get a guest or two that ask me if I did a rain dance or they ask me if they can be apart of the Pueblo's dances because they just recently found out they are like 1/16th Native American etc.
Like I've said previously, it totally depends on the country you are in what resources are available. Russia is very backwards when it comes to this stuff and it is extremely different to get help. Whereas there are a large number of charities that operate in the UK and USA to offer support for DV.
What happens next? Now that the issue has been brought to light, what can your average citizen do about it?
Should schools stop teaching "Little Red Ridinghood" and other lit that teaches children to hate people who have more than two legs? Hate literature in schools is a very big problem in our area.
Congratulations. I wish you much success. Which Linux distro is your favorite? Thanks.
...because they just recently found out they are like 1/16th Native American
There's a reason why the Generokee tribe is the fastest growing Native American tribe in all of North America.
I THINK ITS PRETTY MESSED UP TO BE SUSPICIOUS OF A GRANDMA JUST BECAUSE SHE HAS HUGE AWESOME TEETH SO YEAH LETS GET THAT BOOK OFF THE SHELVES
Thank you!! :) I've been happy with Debian for the past several years. It's super solid, easily editable and has a huge community. I've tried Mint which is also solid and Ubuntu which I always run into driver errors on. I once tried Arch. That's really all I'll say about it. I like large packages of compatible software that some would consider "bloat".
How did you start programming at 8 years old? Were you nudged in that direction by a friend or family member?
You have to renew your ID card every two year?!
My dad was super into computers and helped get me into computer games from a very young age, so I was always fascinated by all sorts of computer games. I tried several times to create (massively over-ambitious) text adventures in Windows Batch script from YouTube tutorials which I could literally just copy out exactly and just change the flavour text.
From there, I learned maybe one or two commands in ActionScript which basically just made buttons work. I didn't really understand how to do anything else, I understood key-frames and the basics of how sprites worked, but yeah- that's how I made and uploaded the award-winning "Catch-A-Button" to Kongregate.
How much emphasis is put on becoming financially successful?
Will you get rich from this?
Honestly I have no idea where to put my expectations. My first instinct is to assume my game will do terribly, but the median number of sales in a game's first month on Steam is ~100 so I'm thinking that maybe I'll make my Steam Direct fee back which would be nice.
What's your next project?
I'm not entirely sure. Maybe something to do with whales. Or mushrooms. Maybe both? Probably just one. I expect that it'll be quite different from Mass O' Kyzt, though!
Not emphasis on being successful financially, but to be wealthy in terms of knowledge and wisdom is what is preached.
Is this practice illegal or is it simply unethical? If it is illegal, which agency is supposed to audit these campaigns and have you reported them?
how do you feel about cats?
It's a grey area, for sure. The FEC is responsible for auditing these accounts but they have just 34 analysts who had to check 20+ million transaction last year. Some ethics advocacy groups have started filing petitions to the FEC to clarify what is and is not legal spending.
AS FAR AS HOUSEPETS GO THEY ARE SMALL AND NOT AT ALL DESCENDED FROM MIGHTY FOREST CREATURES AND THEY SHOULD PROBABLY STAY INSIDE BECAUSE HONESTLY THEY HAVE A VERY SNACK LIKE VIBE ABOUT THEM
OBVIOUSLY I DONT THINK THAT
IF I WANT A SNACK I DO SOMETHING LOW IN CALORIES LIKE PIRATES BOOTY
BECAUSE A HUGE PART OF BEING HUMAN IS BEING ABLE TO EAT LIKE 60 OF SOMETHING AND NOT FEEL BAD
ANYWAY I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO MY NEIGHBORS CAT IT WAS PROBABLY SOME SORT OF INCREDIBLE BIRDS FAULT
Based on my rough accounting of the people listed in your Zombie Campaigns Database, and not looking at their individual behaviors or the amounts spent, it looks like democrats are more likely to do this than republicans.
This observation seems more partisan than I'd like it to be. I don't want this to turn into another Reddit "us" vs. "them" thread, but I found this interesting.
- Is that a fair assessment?
- Do you feel that one side or the other spent more this way?
- Was there a difference in how this money was spent by party?
Edit: Below /u/EliMurray says
there are more than 18,000 campaign committees filed with the FEC so we didn't get to look exhaustively at all of them
This is an important point that invalidates my "analysis" above. Counting the number of Ds or Rs on the list isn't worthwhile, because the list isn't exhaustive.
What is the best sandwich?
I think it's a nonpartisan issue that both parties should want to address. Our database only shows the 102 worst offenders that we found but there are more than 18,000 campaign committees filed with the FEC so we didn't get to look exhaustively at all of them and I'm sure there are many more out there that we haven't reported on yet.
ITS ALL ABOUT WHAT MOOD YOURE IN
A DRUNK GRILLED CHEESE IS BASICALLY A SEXUAL EXPERIENCE
A GOOD STEAK SANDWICH WILL MAKE YOU SO FULL YOU GET TIRED AND THAT RULES
BUT REMEMBER THAT TECHNICALLY ANYTHING BETWEEN BREAD IS A SANDWICH SO GRAB SOME BREAD AND GET CREATIVE
What do you think will come of this? Are you getting information to the right people (or are you hoping the public will take this information and wise up?)?
What's your favourite item of clothing to wear on a night out?
You have to pay a fee to publish on steam? I figured they just took a percentage of sales.
Is there one specific part of your culture you wish more people knew about ?
The buck stops at congress. Congress writes the loopholes into law and underfunds the agency tasked with enforcement.
Through our reporting we've been in contact with various groups such as CREW, IssueOne, and CLC who are filing petitions with the FEC to better clarify the rules on what is and is not allowed. Ultimately, though, the only way to get change is for voters to make it known that they want reform from their reps and sens.
GOD THERE ARE SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM, I AM CONSTANTLY USING THE MONEY I EARN AT MY CORPORATE JOB TO BUY CLOTHES TO WEAR IN MY FREE TIME. RECENTLY I BOUGHT A SWEATER AND THE OTHER DAY I BOUGHT A VEST BUT IF YOU SEE ME OUT ON A FRIDAY NIGHT I WILL LIKELY BE WEARING SOMETHING THAT RESEMBLES A SUIT I RETRIEVED OFF A DEAD MAN AT THE BEACH AND I WILL ALSO PROBABLY BE PRETTY SURPRISED TO SEE YOU BECAUSE USUALLY AT NIGHT I KIND OF HAVE THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE
They do both. You have to pay a $100/£70 fee per title to put your game on Steam, and then they take some percentage of sales on top of that. At this point, they can afford to since they're the biggest digital games retailer in the world! ^^
There's a lot of things I wish people knew about, I can't think of one specifically but there's a reason why I am a film major, I want to be able to show the world what goes on in our daily lives and how we operate on a daily basis. A lot of people think that Pueblo ppl live in Tipi's, etc but that couldnt be further from the truth
What's the hardest part about being a wol perfectly normal human?
Haha I love this answer to what your next project will be
LISTEN BASICALLY THE WHOLE HUMAN EXPERIENCE IS SUPER DIFFICULT AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS I DONT UNDERSTAND BUT I THINK THE HARDEST PART IS PRETENDING THAT I “GET” TWIN PEAKS I AM SO SORRY I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING I AM MISSING HERE PLEASE JUST DO NOT HURT ME I HAVE COME SO FAR
I bought the game. Will play it tomorrow. Any tips?
Thanks for the 15% discount by the way!
Woo, thank you!! :) Biggest tip would probably be to upgrade toughness last>.> things get very hard very fast when the Kyztlings take a lot of hits to kill.
Posole for sure!
Its amazing how you are so composed and focused on your work for your age. I was so busy trying to get rid of my virginity at that age. Ugh.
Anyway now that i have a kid of my own, how would a completely clueless adult like me introduce a kid to the world of computers and coding that could lead his appreciation in considering this field as work? Just thinking ahead. He is only in preschool actually.
I noticed in another comment that you are film major (same here!):
Any Native American-centered films or directors you recommend? I'm admittedly quite ignorant on this subject.
Do you have a favorite director/film?
AS A TEEN I OFTEN SPENT MY TIME LISTENING TO CONTEMPORARY MUSICS AND YELLING AT ONE OR BOTH OF MY PARENTS. I WOULD ALSO OFTEN THINK ABOUT HOW WOLVES DONT REALLY HAVE THE CONCEPT OF TEEN YEARS AND HOW ONE DAY THEY ARE BORN BLIND AND THEN THE NEXT THEY ARE EXPECTED TO JUST KILL STUFF AND BATHE IN BLOOD AND ALWAYS WORSHIP THE HUNT AND MAYBE SOME OF US WANTED TO LISTEN TO THE MOUNTAIN GOATS TOO BUT WE NEVER GOT THAT CHANCE BECAUSE WE LIVED IN THE GODDAMN WOODS AND HAD TO INSTEAD MURDER ACTUAL GOATS NEAR AN ACTUAL MOUNTAIN
Thank you! :)
Hmm, I'd suggest to get him into the practice of thinking programmatically/logically first of all(though that's hard if he's in pre-school!) Alternatively, get him some computer games. I think that there's really no sure-fire way. I got into programming because every time I saw something cool, I just wanted to make that thing. I got a lot of games when I was a child and so I just kept trying to make different types of video games- little text adventures(which I never completed), etc.
I really don't have much experience with kids so I don't know if anything I said was helpful, but I hope you got something out of that!^^
I love the revenant, anything with Wes Studi, and I love Tarantino. We should collab on a project someday!
What engine/framework/language did you create the game in? Well the answer to that was in the title...
Did you make the art yourself? I enjoy coding small game projects now and then but always work with free placeholder assets, I don't feel like I could dedicate the time to also learning how to make art, as I have a lot of things going on and also value leisure activities outside of sitting behind a computer, and it doesn't really interest me that much either.
Do older members of your community still hold grudges against whites for what they have done to Native Americans?
ABSOLUTELY, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE MORE OF A CONDEMNATION OF BELFORTS DESPICABLE BEHAVIOR BUT THEN HE MAKES A CAMEO AT THE END AND YOURE ALL LIKE “WHAAAA DOES SCORSESE ACTUALLY LIKE THIS MONSTER?” AND IT KIND OF SOURED THE WHOLE THING FOR ME BUT MAN ISNT THAT JUST CLASSIC CAPITALISM
Yup! I made the art myself.
It's actually quite a funny story about how I came to make the graphics for this game. I made so many placeholder graphics for previous games that my skills just improved without really noticing. Art is a lot more analytical than you'd think- being able to make the shading consistent and correct is really like most of it. Apart from that, I'd recommend to just keep the sprites lo-res and relatively small so that the human mind fills in the details by itself^^
If you can't deal with art, get a 3rd party on to help you with the art. I've never done this before, so I can't give much advice on that!!
Not really, if you respect our dances and ceremonies and don't ask stupid non educated questions then we are all good, but you would be surprised how many people try to become part of the culture, etc. Life is all about respect and even though we never fully received it, we are taught to be a bigger person, mentally and emotionally.
How do I convince people that white space is important in drawing attention?
What was the hardest obstacle you had to get through in this whole journey?
What does your tribe do to hand down ancestral knowledge, spiritual beliefs, tribal history, etc? Can you share anything that might be meaningful to people?
Thanks for doing the AMA! I grew up in NM and miss the beautiful landscapes.
USE A TON OF WHITE SPACE AND GET THEIR ATTENTION
What is some recommended reading you might have? Also where do you get your existentialist wolf-like philosophy from?
Coming from a 35 year old who started a web agency at 17 years old, which has evolved into a product company with 50 employees today: It's not always the case that you will find the best solution (or even idea) on the first day (or first hour). That's kind of like publishing a book at first draft.
When working on product ideas, it is very useful to build quick prototypes in the beginning, testing it on friends and improving the idea with a few iterations to set the features properly. Then start on the full implementation. By the way, even if you do what I just outlined, you will find golden nuggets along the way. It is impossible to cover all corners of a product when planning.
It's impressive that you've published a game on Steam at 17 - keep going, and remember to have fun with other parts of life while doing it!
Are there any big misconceptions about Native American history and culture that were created by Hollywood?
UNFORTUNATELY I FIND THAT BOOKS MAKE ME INCREDIBLY ANGRY FOR SOME REASON MAYBE ITS THE TINY WORDS OR THE PAGES IN CONSTANT NEED OF TURNING BUT EVERY TIME I GET CLOSE TO ONE OF THOSE LITTLE GUYS NEXT THING I KNOW ITS JUST ALL SHREDDED UP
AS FAR AS THE ORIGINS OF MY PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY I WOULD ATTRIBUTE MY OUTLOOK ON LIFE TO SUCH GREAT WORKS AS “SURVIVING THE WINTER” AND “LIVING WITHIN A CRUCIBLE OF LIFE AND DEATH ITSELF”
What are your favorite hair care products? Any tips on applying them for the most stylish results?
Why should I play this?
That is to say, there are so many excellent indie games on steam, what do you think makes yours stand out, and what differentiates it from all the others.
How do you feel about the usage of Indian vs Native vs Native American? Is there something else that's preferable?
LISTEN SOME PEOPLE WOULD SAY THAT MY HAIR IS MORE OF A SELF REGULATING COAT OF FUR THAT HELPS STABILIZE MY BODY TEMPERATURE BUT HONESTLY I LOVE USING IT FOR FASHION REASONS. JUST GET A HUMAN PALM FULL OF SOME SORT OF CREAM OR GOOP AND SMOOSH IT ALL AROUND AND EVENTUALLY BOOM YOU JUST SPENT 30 DOLLARS TO MAKE YOUR HEAD LOOK DIFFERENT AND WHATS MORE HUMAN THAN THAT
I'm not going to try to sell you this game as the best indie game because it's really not, but I think that mine stands mostly due to the interesting premise of upgrading your enemies and the (well, in my eyes) cute lil alien designs.
I'm really happy with how the combat feels. It's as tight as I want it to be, the game feels fast-paced enough to be exciting and there are enough extrinsic incentives(unlockables, achievements, etc) to keep the game interesting and satisfying to play.
I hope I helped you understand something about the game, at least!
I prefer native american but sometimes people say it without realizing it, so I have no problem when it comes to that unless you say it in a derogatory way.
How would you suggest catching some sheep? Asking for a friend.
What’s your favorite kind of cheese 🧀?
How do you feel about efforts to preserve native languages? Do you think there's a point where it's not worth it to try?
WELL AS MY MOTHER USED TO SAY
EACH AND EVERY DAY YOU MUST JUSTIFY YOUR EXISTENCE TO THE CRUEL AND UNYIELDING HAND OF NATURE
YOU CATCH MORE SHEEP WITH KINDNESS THAN WITH 300 PSI OF JAW STRENGTH
BE NICE TO SHEEP AND MAYBE THEY WILL HANG OUT WITH YOU OR WHATEVER
one of my main goals in life is to use my platform to preserve the languages of tewa and keres for the nearby pueblos. If i can do that it would be my greatest accomplishment.
It is incredibly important to preserve these languages, as most of our stories are passed down verbally and not written in books or posted online
Hey man, just letting you know that you're off to a great start and you should keep going with your dreams.
Have there ever been any design issues or ideas that just didn't make the cut? Do you think you will implement anything new into the future?
How do you feel about a lot of facts of Native American history being taken out of/ changed in textbooks? Specifically Trail of Tears and changing the narrative to essentially say that Native Americans willfully gave up their land.
Thanks for doing the AMA!
WILLIAM ‘REFRIGERATOR’ PERRY
Thank you!!! :)
Yeah, definitely. I wanted there to be multiple boss types, I wanted there to be a big final boss and a lot more unique upgrades which would be randomly offered to the player(choose between: enemies explode on death, vision reduced to a certain radius, your gun now overheats) but that really wasn't feasible for a single person to create. Because of that, I just had to cut it out and keep going.
I don't know how I'll treat the game in the future. Right now I'm still in the "cooling off" phase- I need a little bit of time to be able to take a step back and see how the game really is, rather than just seeing little sprites with bits of code attached running around the screen. I think that it's not unlikely I'll add a few more skins to the roster in the future, but I can't promise that.
That's one of the things/stories I would like to be told from our point of view. A lot of our history has been edited and changed because some people may have realized what was done to us was/is not acceptable. If there were more prominent natives then we could let this be known to plenty of people but right now we need help identifying certain leaders amongst our community that are willing to sacrifice their time and travel to spread the word of our history. I would like to be one of those leaders someday
Yea, as asked before...what is your Linux distro of choice?
Where in NM and when is this event held? Is it open to the general public? Or is it a private tribal event?
IT IS BOOMING
I HAVE TONS OF HUMAN FRIENDS WITH WHOM I CONSUME ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND BRUNCH MEALS AND SOMETIMES WE EVEN GET TOGETHER DURING THE WEEK TO COMPARE HOW TIRED WE ARE
It's in Ohkay Owingeh, NM on Feb 18th, you can stop by as it is open to the general public from 6 am- 4 pm
What is the best method to teach yourself programing? I tried when I was a kid Game Maker and GBA rom hacking but I never wrapped my head around it.
OH HELL YEAH MAN. I LOVE BEING AN ALPHA MALE. IF YOU GO TO THE BAR, GUESS WHO IS THERE RUINING IT SURPRISE IT IS ME THE ALPHA MALE. I WILL ABSOLUTELY BE TALKING TOO LOUD. I WILL DEFINITELY WAG MY MONEY AT THE BARTENDER LIKE IT IS NOT JUST A FIVE DOLLAR BILL. AND YOU BET THAT I WILL BE STARTING A FIGHT OUTSIDE BECAUSE SOME GUY ACCIDENTALLY CAME WITHIN 10 FEET OF MY GIRLFRIEND. I AM TERRIBLE.
I think the best method is to:
Make sure that you are programming something you're interested in
Don't try to cram too much knowledge into your head at once. For instance, don't try to comprehend list comprehensions in Python if you've only just learned what a list even is.
Don't feel bad about stealing code from random StackOverflow posts. As long as you have a basic understanding of what it does, you're pretty much good to go. I mean, don't out-right plagiarize but algorithms are free.
I also tried Game Maker 1.something and it never really clicked with me. I tried to make a fan-game of a book by some friend who wrote short stories several years ago, but it never really went anywhere. I would recommend the Godot Engine, since it's got a built-in scripting language which is similar to Python. Python is a fairly simple language to learn and definitely one I'd start with if you don't know what you're doing.
Hope I helped!
EDIT: Regarding #2: I meant that you don't necessarily need to be able to recreate it on command, as long as you see it and understand that it does a thing even if you can concede that you'd never have thought of it on your own. It came off a bit wrong, as MajorMoustache pointed out below.
How much does being able to understand complex mathematics (algorithms, for example) factor into being a computer programmer and video game developer? Hope that's not a silly question!
Not a silly question at all!
I think that you don't really need to understand much complex mathematics in order to program to a sufficient level. Things get a bit more complex in 3D (quaternions... yuck) but honestly as long as you've had enough practice thinking in a logical/programmatic way, you should be fine.
I think that some knowledge of vectors and matrices come in handy, things like dot products, cross products, and what it means to normalize a vector. Also, some physics helps if you're dealing with a physics engine, so differentiation, integration, getting comfy with parabolas all helps out a lot. I think you can get quite far without most of that, though.
Is it just me, or does much of human folly leave you howling in the darkness for some sort of sense, and maybe a nice steak?
CS graduate here, been in industry for quite a while now.
Much of what you learn in CS isn't directly applicable on a day to day basis for most graduates. (IE I'm not using the master method to solve recurrence relations day in / day out, etc...) In retrospect, getting the CS degree was still very important for several reasons:
- Many of the classes, including the gen eds are all about the long term effect of training your brain to think in a certain way. Much like professional athletes make decisions instantaneously without conscious thought - due to training, that is what college/ the CS program is doing to you. Training your brain to think certain ways. You will approach problems in a very methodical way, you will see solutions in some cases effortlessly. There will be things that come naturally to you, almost without effort, that non-CS people will struggle with. This is nearly invaluable.
- Related to the above, you will learn the theory behind how things work. You will lean how microprocessors work. You will learn how the stack / heap / registers / caches / ALUs work. You will learn some kind of assembly programming language which you will probably never use again. But it will instill deep understanding which in odd and unexpected ways give you insight into problems and how to solve them. People who never learned those fundamentals are not able to solve the problem, or it will take them orders of magnitude longer.
- For all the above reasons, CS has some serious respect in the industry. Not having a CS degree will be a serious handicap and close many doors to you. On average, you can also expect a substantial pay cut compared to people with one. In my area it ranges $10-20k / year. I hear complaints all of the time from people in industry who don't have their CS degree. There are always exceptions, but this is the average norm.
- Networking, getting to know your peers -> Can open tremendous opportunities for you down the road. CS is fucking hard. The hardest thing I've done in my life. After going through it, especially connecting with people from your alma mater, you have instant respect for one another. In that way, it's comparable to any other life experience where people went through a very difficult experience together and bonded because of that.
THE KEY TO HUMAN FOLLY IS UNDERSTANDING THAT JUST BENEATH THE SURFACE OF YOUR SKIN LURKS A SKELETON THAT IS ABSOLUTELY STOKED ABOUT ONE DAY BEING FREE
IF YOU GO TO THE BANK GUESS WHAT THE SKELETON IS AT THE BANK TOO
IF YOU TAKE A BATH YOU ARE TAKING A BATH WITH YOUR ONLY ETERNAL FRIEND: YOUR BONES
ONCE YOU ACCEPT THE WHOLE SKELETON THING, GOING TO THE BANK AND STUFF IS HONESTLY A LOT MORE FUN, ENJOY THE SKIN WHILE ITS THERE
I'm not actually planning on going to university(the UK equivalent to college), since I don't think the monetary and time expenses of going to uni are going to out-weigh how much I can do by building my portfolio by actually working on games. It might not work, but I think it's worth trying. Worst case scenario, I can always go back to uni.. right?
Yeah, I currently take Computing as an A-level and it's really only tangentially related to anything that I could conceivably want to do in the future. A surprisingly small amount of it is actually programming and computer-related work- there's a lot of systems analysis and weird paperwork stuff that I don't like.
Thank you! :)
SEE I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT YOU GUYS
I SIGNED UP FOR TWITTER, CLASSIC HUMAN BEHAVIOR
I MADE MY DISPLAY NAME NOT A WOLF SO THAT PEOPLE WOULD KNOW THAT I AM NOT A WOLF
I MADE MY USERNAME SICKOFWOLVES SO PEOPLE KNOW WHATS UP
AND I CONSTANTLY TALK ABOUT HOW I DO NOT LIKE WOLVES
AND YET PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS LIKE HEY DUDE ARE YOU SOME SORT OF SECRET WOLF BECAUSE THERES LITERALLY A RAW CHICKEN HANGING OUT OF YOUR BACKPACK
THE ANSWER IS NO NEXT QUESTION PLEASE
I'm taking a break for a few months since I need to focus on schoolwork, but we'll see by the time my next project rolls around. :)
If you were a wolf, what's the first thing that you would do?
How many copies per day are you selling since release?
I can't tell you that, Steam might get annoyed at me. :)
What is your opinion on the moon? Additionally what is your favourite style of ham - honey baked? Maple glazed? Trench coat shaped?
What's you're best piece of advice relating to game-dev and/or programming techniques?
I WAS NOT TOO LONG AGO INFORMED THAT THE MOON IS NOT JUST A LIGHT SOURCE BUT IN FACT AN ENTIRE LOCATION AND HOLY HELL WAS THAT A GAME CHANGER BUT I DEFINITELY DID NOT THROW UP ON MY COUCH ABOUT IT SO PLEASE STOP INSINUATING THAT I DID
AS FOR HAM, I AM NOT SURE THERE IS A WRONG WAY TO DO IT PAL. RAW, BLOODY, STILL ACTUALLY JUST A PIG, ACTIVELY RUNNING AWAY FROM ME, FROM THE FLOOR OF THE BUS, WHATEVER STYLE ITS IN, I WILL ABSOLUTELY EAT IT
As for gamedev in general, probably "fail fast". I know it's not strictly a game development saying, but I think when interpreted to mean that you need to prototype->evaluate as many times as possible in a project's life cycle it's super helpful. I went through like 4 different iterations of the main gameplay hook(upgrade your enemies) before settling on the current one, and if I didn't just bite the bullet and effectively delete tens of hours of work on the earlier iterations my game would have been a lot worse off for it.
Are you always not a wolf, or only when there isn't a full moon?
May I ask how did you manage to have a 2D game require minimum of 2.4Ghz processor with recommended being 3.0Ghz? I hope you just didn't setup requirements correctly, because otherwise I can already tell that it was done in worst way possible as I don't see what would require so much power, from preview...
That's like what 3D games with tons of stuff in them require.
AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER I HAVE BEEN A HUMAN MAN
STRESSING OUT ABOUT MY COWORKERS OPINIONS OF ME
BRINGING UP BREAKING BAD ON FIRST DATES
THE WHOLE DEAL
I'm going to be honest I just guessed based on 3 computers, two of which are pretty strong and the third is a laptop. I hope that nobody takes those too seriously^^
Can third parties use data from Atlas Obscura? Not the actual articles, but say, if I wanted a list of all the places you guys deemed interesting and put it on the web so you can search for places of interest on a map. What kind of permission/license would we need?
I DO NOT WORK FOR ATLAS OBSCURA THIS AMA IS ACTUALLY BEING HOSTED IN EXCHANGE FOR ME NO LONGER HANGING OUT NEAR THEIR DUMPSTER EVEN THOUGH I KEEP TELLING THEM I JUST GO THERE TO SMOKE TONS OF CIGARETTES AND I AM NOT AT ALL TRYING TO SEE IF THEY GOT ANYTHING GOOD CATERED FOR LUNCH TODAY, SOMEONE WILL REACH OUT TO YOU SOON
WHAT THE HELL I THOUGHT WE WERE SCREENING THESE
